Ever since Tech for Good <a href=\"https:\/\/benrmatthews.com\/tech-for-good-rise-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">became a thing<\/a>. Charities and digital agencies have been getting into bed together and building products and services for good. They\u2019ve had some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tech4goodawards.com\/finalists-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">amazing successes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Not every coupling ends happily\u2026<\/h2>\n<p id=\"\">But just like it is for many new couples, relating to one another has, at times, been tricky. Despite best intentions there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/techforgoodhub.co.uk\/tech-companies-charities\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">language barriers<\/a>. And some cultural differences. This had led to friction between working styles and project management challenges\u2026<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u2026which can result in tension, fallouts and some failures. Some partnerships failed to produce offspring and many have split up after their first to go. Heavy of heart they\u2019ve left in search of a new partner, usually after taking \u2018time out of the game\u2019 first.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">\u2026but there\u2019s always much to be learnt.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"\">Regardless of success or failure, each attempt to relate has had value. The charity sector has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/wethecatalysts\/how-to-make-charity-digital-partner-relationships-work-a3c9eae2e5ab\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">learnt a lot<\/a> about working with agencies and made massive leaps forward in its capacity for tech for good. Some charities are even <a href=\"https:\/\/techforgoodhub.co.uk\/changed-charities\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">applying digital and design based methods to the rest of their work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">With this in mind, Digital Spark, Catalyst\u2019s feeder project, set out to better understand <em id=\"\">how the agency model of working might better serve charities<\/em> in building digital services and products. Hitherto we\u2019ve focused on the opposite: how charities need to learn and change to use agencies better.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Working with service designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/miranda-dixon-4b718ba4\/?originalSubdomain=uk\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Miranda Dixon<\/a>, we interviewed 16 charities and agencies (all agencies were designing digital products and services with charities). Then we analysed and synthesised our findings. Out of these we\u2019ve extracted three insights to share. In this, Part 1, we\u2019ll look at Needs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Needs come first<\/h2>\n<p id=\"\">When it comes to designing digital services <a href=\"https:\/\/techforgoodhub.co.uk\/user-stories\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">user needs<\/a> lead the way. So we took the same approach to the research, digging into and documenting each partner\u2019s needs first. We\u2019re publishing the needs of both partners because, just like all relationships, both have needs that need to be met.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Put your needs on the table<\/h2>\n<p id=\"\">Each need represents a discussion item worth bringing to the agency-charity table, especially if partners are new to each other. Each need has potential to create <em id=\"\">cohesion or friction, <\/em>depending on whether it\u2019s discussed or not.<em id=\"\"> <\/em>Leave any of these needs under the table and your relationship will suffer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Six Charity User Needs<\/h2>\n<ol id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">I need to be able to <strong id=\"\">trust<\/strong> the agency I am working with so that I can be <strong id=\"\">confident<\/strong> in the advice that they give me<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need the agency I work with to <strong id=\"\">understand the sector <\/strong>and landscape that I work in so that they can deliver a project most <strong id=\"\">effectively<\/strong> within the <strong id=\"\">boundaries of this<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need to be able to <strong id=\"\">understand<\/strong> the <strong id=\"\">digital product build process<\/strong> so that I can <strong id=\"\">steer<\/strong> the project toward the <strong id=\"\">outcome <\/strong>I want to achieve<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need the agency that I work with to <strong id=\"\">adapt <\/strong>their working style so that I can <strong id=\"\">steer<\/strong> the project toward the <strong id=\"\">outcome<\/strong> we want to achieve<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need <strong id=\"\">transparency<\/strong> at all times during a project so that I can manage<strong id=\"\"> internal expectations <\/strong>and make<strong id=\"\"> decisions <\/strong>when needed based on project changes<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need my <strong id=\"\">values<\/strong> to be <strong id=\"\">aligned <\/strong>with those of my digital agency partner so we can work more effectively together<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"\"><em id=\"\">\u201cGet to know them as well as you possibly can. Really get to understand below the skin of what makes that charity tick; they are all different, all have their idiosyncrasies. Don\u2019t assume; treat every charity as if you haven\u2019t worked with them before.\u201d \u2014 <\/em>Agency<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Six Agency User Needs<\/h2>\n<ol id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">I need my charity client to <strong id=\"\">understand the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/playbook.wearecast.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong id=\"\">digital product build<\/strong><\/a> process so that they can <strong id=\"\">steer <\/strong>the project toward the outcome they want to achieve<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need the charity that I work with to <strong id=\"\">adapt their working style<\/strong> so that we can deliver the work to the best of our abilities<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need my <strong id=\"\">values to be aligned <\/strong>with those of my charity partner so that I feel comfortable working with them<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need the charity I work with to agree to a <strong id=\"\">flexible scope<\/strong> so that I can deliver the outcomes that my client wants rather than focus on outputs<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I need planned projects to be paid for and <strong id=\"\">start on time<\/strong> so that I can <strong id=\"\">manage the finances<\/strong> and resources of my organisation<\/li>\n<li id=\"\">I want to <strong id=\"\">do projects<\/strong> for charities so that everybody in my organisation feels fulfilled<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cOur organisational values are aligned and that\u2019s what I like.\u201d \u2014 <em id=\"\">Charity<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"\">\u201cAgencies are often really nice and do charity discounts etc. but that puts pressure on the agency. If you shave costs you shave resources. Do they feel they are compromising on quality?\u201d \u2014 <em id=\"\">Charity<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\">Not all needs must be met from the same source<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"\" class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"center\">\n<div id=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image for post\" src=\"https:\/\/promo.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/6048aaba4185852b397e1d8a_1e4RsgtqpxYkwF2lnEesvYg.jpeg\" id=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" loading=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"\">We believe these lists reach across both parties\u2019 main needs in relationship with one another. But we don\u2019t necessarily believe all needs must be met by their partner. For example, agencies might better understand charities\u2019 context and landscapes through their own research too. And charities might understand product build processes through reading more broadly and talking to other charities about their experiences.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\"><strong id=\"\">Can all these needs be met?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"\">It\u2019s been apparent that not all charities\u2019 or agencies\u2019 needs have always been met.
